Synopsis
Curriculum and pedagogies of literacy in primary and secondary schools. The unit focuses on whole language pedagogy using it as a case study for discussion of curriculum and pedagogical issues, and to examine the theoretical underpinnings of a range of literacy pedagogies. Factors which impede access to literacy education in schools will also be of interest.
Objectives
At the completion of this unit students will have re-examined what is meant by whole language; developed an understanding of literacies as socio-cultural constructs; examined the theoretical underpinnings of whole language pedagogy; reviewed and evaluated various critiques of whole language pedagogy; examined differing pedagogues of literacy education in relation to current State-based literacy curriculum documents; developed a familiarity with the issues related to differential access to literacy education through schooling.
