Synopsis

This unit is designed for students across a wide range of education courses and streams. It offers students powerful ways of understanding gender and its relationship to educational identities, practices, cultures and policies. It addresses some of the most topical and contentious debates in the field of gender and education. Students will also learn about some intriguing new gender issues in educational settings and consider their implications for their own educational practices.

Objectives

The broad aim of this unit is to help students to answer the following questions:

1 What is gender? What has gender got to do with education? What is 'gender reform' in education?

2 What are the various ways available to think about these questions? In terms of their own personal and professional experience and in relation to the readings, which are the most persuasive?

3 What are some of the big gender and education debates and issues of today and how can these best be understood and addressed?

Assessment

Reflective exercise (1500 words): 40%
Essay (2500 words): 60%

Off-campus attendance requirements

Students studying in the off-campus (distance) mode should expect to spend roughly 12 hours a week on the Readings and other activities.
