Synopsis
This unit introduces students to a wide range of fundamental science concepts, encompassing the disciplines of Biochemistry, Cell biology, Chemistry, Ecology & conservation biology, Epidemiology, Geology & earth science, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular biology, Nanotechnology, Paleontology, Physics, Physiology, Virology, and the Scientific method.
This will be achieved by exploring the scientific concepts that underpin a range of current and topical issues, such as athletic performance, extraterrestrial life, alternative energy sources, alcohol metabolism, forensic analysis, GM foods, fibres and textiles and conservation biology.
Objectives
Having completed this unit, students will
understand fundamental concepts of general science
appreciate that many current issues have a scientific basis
have the tools to search for scientific information and the capacity to evaluate this information

5 on-line quizzes (MCQ or short answer) and 5 graded activities, 50%; Major assignment (3000 words), 50%
Contact hours
Each week: one 1-hour seminar, one 1-hour lecture, one 2-hour workshop; for 10 weeks
