EDF2906 - Keyboard musicianship6 points, SCA Band 0, 0.125 EFTSLUndergraduate Faculty of EducationLeader: Dr P De VriesOfferedNot offered in 2008 SynopsisThis unit is devised for complete beginners at the keyboard. Students will develop skills in musicianship and basic keyboard playing. They will work on a limited repertoire of pieces suitable for use with young children, develop basic technical skills and explore various ways of improvising simple accompaniments. Work at the keyboard is supported by activities and exercises designed to reinforce skills in rhythm, melody, harmony and notation reading. ObjectivesUpon successful completion of this unit, students should have developed basic skills in notation reading and keyboard playing; mastered a small repertoire of keyboard pieces suitable for use in primary schools, and committed some of them to memory; developed an effective practice routine and an ability to analyse performance problems and devise strategies to overcome them; improved their aural skills; and developed the ability to improvise simple accompaniments.
