EDF2242 - Popular culture: structure, perceptions, interpretations6 points, SCA Band 0, 0.125 EFTSLUndergraduate Faculty of EducationLeader: TBAOfferedNot offered in 2008 SynopsisIn this unit students will study: experiences, mechanisms and structures which shape people's perceptions of popular culture; how peer groups, gang membership and special interest groups influence and interpret the culture; how popular culture is shaped by various media, communication technology and cultural and social organisations; and power relationships relating to race, stereotyping and gender and their impact on popular culture. ObjectivesUpon successful completion of this unit, students should have developed knowledge and understandings about the way in which popular culture is shaped by media and communication and cultural and social organisations; developed knowledge and understanding about the role cultural and social organisations play in people's perceptions and interpretations of culture; undertaken an independent research project and associated methodology.
