Synopsis

Local and Metropolitan Area Networks, fundamentals of computer data communications, LAN Transmission Media, Network Topology, Medium Access Control, ATM: Asynchronous Transfer Mode, the OSI Reference Model, LAN System Software, LAN Application Software, LAN Installation, LAN Administration, LAN Management (Planning, Control, Configuration, Performance, Security, Accounting). Structure, management and administration of a Novell network. (subject to approval)

Objectives

At the completion of this unit students should have a basic understanding of most (or many) aspects of local and wider are networks: the hardware and software; the physical structures and topologies; administration and management (ISO standards); the protocols and Open Systems Interconnection; installation; and a familiarity with the Novell operation system.
