Laptops for CoPS CGE Courses

For some CoPS CGE Courses, participants need to bring their own laptop computer. Most Windows laptops will be adequate. Special requirements are:

• the laptop must run Windows XP or later operating system;
• the laptop must have at least 512Kb of RAM, and be able to read CDs;
• the laptop must have a separate mouse (even if it has a touchpad or other pointing device);
• "Administrator" or "Power User" access may be needed during the install process (this might be an issue if your laptop belongs to, or was configured by, your organization's IT section).
• the laptop must be able to "open a DOS box" [Start...Run..."cmd"]. Occasionally system administrators configure PCs to prevent this.
• you must bring a plug adaptor so your laptop can plug into a standard local power socket.

Be aware that GEMPACK is most heavily tested on PCs using Australian or USA versions of Windows XP. Occasionally problems arise with Asian versions of Windows, or with Windows Vista. Prior to the course, a good way to test if your laptop is compatible with GEMPACK software would be to download and run the MINIMAL free training software. Completion of the MINIMAL exercises is compulsory for Practical CGE course participants.

Australian/New Zealand electrical plugs/sockets

Australian plugs have two or three flat pins, as shown below:

Supply is 240 volts, 50Hz. The same plugs are used in New Zealand.

European electrical plugs/sockets

European plugs often have two round pins, as shown below:

Supply is 230 volts, 50Hz.
