Philharmonic Orchestra
The Monash University Philharmonic Society or "the Phil" was started by students in 1982 for the promotion of friendly on-campus music groups for students, staff and the community of Monash. The society now boasts over 150 members with playing experience ranging from a couple of years to musical degree standard. There are three different ensembles: the Monash Philharmonic Orchestra, Monash Symphonic Winds and the Monash Jazz Orchestra (MoJO). Each group performs regularly in their own concerts, combined concerts, lunchtime concerts and the Melbourne Bands Festival.
The repertoire ranges from swing to Latin, funk to rock, classical to techno, tribal to fanfare, we have done it all! Rehearsals take place on campus once a week, as well as music camps, and regular social events such as the infamous cocktail party, minigolf challenge and trivia night. Auditions for MoJO are held at the start of the year, as well as some for the Philharmonic Orchestra, and any other new members are welcome at any time.
