International Student Perspective

There are obvious challenges that you face when you are a first year student but even more so when you're an international student, like myself. The language barrier, meeting and making friends and being homesick for Hong Kong were just a few of the things I experienced. However, overcoming these obstacles by using the range of support services and making an effort to get out and interact with people made the journey much easier.

I sought assistance from a number of support services provided by Monash including Accommodation, Counselling and the Language and Learning Services (LLS). In my experience, you have to be organised and make an appointment in advance to see the LLS Co-coordinator because there are hundreds of other students seeking help with their assignments.

I was in the room next to where the Monash shooting took place two years ago. Afterwards I was in shock and scared because I never imagined an event like this would happen here in Australia. I really needed to talk to someone and found guidance from the counsellors here at Clayton.

Being outgoing and participating in activities helped me meet people and has even improved my English. I joined the Monash Men's Volleyball Team for a year and made a great group of friends while enjoying the sport. Also, being the General Secretary of the Clayton's International Student Association and the President of the International Law Association has created opportunities and provided me with a lot of social and leadership skills.

Most importantly, I have become a mentor for new international students by using my experiences to help guide them through their uni life.
