Yun - an international student’s perspective

group of new international students

Many find the international student experience to be nerve-racking. I was no exception, despite my family's company in Australia. I was nervous, not knowing what to expect. Orientation was an important process for me as it helped familiarise me with the campus and people. I found the staff at Monash to be friendly. They were happy to answer queries and provided useful information.

Monash University provides diverse learning opportunities. This enabled me to expand my knowledge and develop my attitudes towards education. In 2007, I had an opportunity to complete a teaching placement in the Cook Islands. This experience and others has helped me develop an international perspective towards education. This is important as I have strong ties to Singapore and Taiwan.

Monash has excellent services for students. I used the Employment and Career Development website to find a maths tutor job. It provides me with teaching experience and confidence. Students should definitely utilise Monash services.

The main difference between Peninsula and other campuses is the relatively small student population. I feel it makes the campus a more conducive learning environment. I enjoy the spacious and quiet environment. It also helps me establish close bonds; lecturers have connected me to networks within my field. In order to become part of the community, it is essential to step out of your comfort zone and get involved.

My favourite things about Australia and Monash are that learning and work opportunities are always available. It is up to individuals to make good use of them to expand their knowledge and experience.
