Could I make it through this time? How was I going to cope with the workload and my family commitments? These were some of those questions that came to mind when I started postgraduate studies.
For postgraduates in my situation, with family and work obligations, the thought of having to juggle studies with a busy life was a bit daunting. I knew it would be a challenge; however, I found I enjoyed being a student again, being under the instruction of others and having to meet assignment deadlines. It gives you the opportunity to discipline your personal time and live the life of a student, which is exciting and fun.
For those new postgraduates who worry that a return to study may be difficult after a long time in the field, it is not as overwhelming as you think. Assistance is always available from friendly, helpful people. Everyone on campus is willing to assist and offer advice whether it is about academic issues, family or your studies. The important thing to remember is to ask many questions and get the help when you need it.
Making new friends also helps, as you’ll gain much information through informal conversation with friends. Thus orientation is an essential time to meet and make new friends and collect as much information as you will need to assist you with your postgraduate studies.
