Cathie - a mature-age student’s experience

new students with our student helpers

University is a challenging experience no matter how old you are, but as a mature age student, you often feel like you are a dinosaur and the oldest student on campus. Surprisingly, there are quite a few dinosaurs about the place!

Mature age students face many unique challenges. We often have to reduce or give up paid work, organise childcare (I have three young children) and squeeze studies around running a household (you soon become an expert at juggling and organisation).

Fortunately, Monash is student friendly. The staff understand what it means to be an older student with help and advice always at hand. The university also offers a variety of support services, such as on-site childcare, financial advice/assistance and free counselling. Using some of these services, making good 'uni friends' and family support has helped me through.

I would strongly recommend anyone contemplating study to consider Monash (and if already enrolled, congratulations). Make sure you check out the services and use them if in need. It can make all the difference between success and not finishing your study. On the whole, my Monash experience has been one of the best and most rewarding times of my life.
