Geoffrey - an international student's experience

international students

There are obvious challenges that you face as a first year student but even more so when you're an international student, like myself. The language barrier, meeting and making friends and being homesick for Hong Kong were just a few of the things I experienced. However, overcoming these obstacles by using the range of support services and making an effort to get out and interact with people made the journey much easier.

I sought assistance from a number of support services provided by Monash including accommodation, counselling and the Learning Skills Unit (LSU). I found you have to be organised and make an appointment to see a Learning Skills Advisor in advance because there are hundreds of other students seeking help with their assignments.

Being outgoing and participating in activities helped me meet people. It also helped me improve my English. I joined the Monash Men's Volleyball team for a year and made a great group of friends. My role as the General Secretary of the Clayton's International Student Association and the President of the International Law Association has created opportunities and provided me with many social and leadership skills.

Most importantly, I have become a mentor to new international students by using my experiences to help guide them through their uni life.
