Academic Support

A range of academic support services and resources is available to students at Monash Gippsland who want to improve their academic performance. The Learning Skills Unit located in the library runs classes and workshops throughout semester to help you hone your academic skills. If you have a particular query about your assignment or approach to study, you can come to a drop-in session in the library for a brief 10 to 15 minute consultation with a learning skills adviser. Drop-in sessions are held regularly from week 2 to week 14.

Learning Skills Online:

A suite of excellent academic support resources can be found online. Websites to visit include:

Language and Learning Online which offers assistance to students who wish to improve their academic performance in areas of essay, report and thesis writing, reading and note taking, grammar, listening to lectures, giving oral presentations and much more.

Learning support for off-campus learners is a resource specifically aimed at off-campus students, providing advice, tips and techniques for successful study.

Learning inspirations focuses on helping all students, including those with a disability, to overcome learning challenges.

Learning support for Higher Degree Research Students is a guide for research degree students as they "climb the research mountain".

Vacation English is a site for international students who want to maintain or improve their English language skills during the university breaks.

Finally, if you're having difficulties with any of your assessment, Monash has a tutoring service which may be able to help you locate a tutor.

Accommodation

For advice about on-campus accommodation, visit our office located in room 4N116, the Monash Residential web site, or telephone (03) 5122-6236 or (03) 51226236. If you are seeking off-campus accommodation, please refer to the Off-Campus Residential web site. Monash Residential Services has useful information regarding off-campus tenancy. There is a new multilingual video on this site called 'renting in Victoria a guide for students'.

If you would like to speak to someone in regards to off-campus accommodation, you are advised to consult the Student Advisor at the Health, Wellbeing and Development Hub located in room 3N102, telephone (03) 5122-6425 or (03) 9902-6425. Residential tenancy advice booklets are available from this office.

There is also a noticeboard outside HWD Hub regarding off-campus accommodation and useful advice.

A representative from Consumer Affairs Victoria is available for consultation once a fortnight during semester to discuss tenancy, scams, cars, mobiles etc. Please check with the Student Advisor at HWD Hub for accurate times during the semester.

Activities, clubs and societies

Clubs and societies are a fantastic way to meet new people. Many clubs and societies operate at the Gippsland campus (see the list on the MUGSU website), but if none of them suit your interests you can always form a new one. Clubs and societies are affiliated either with the Student Union or Monash Sport. For further information talk to the activities officer, the Student Union or the Sport and Recreation Officer in the Student Union office or via phone on (03) 5122-6248 or 1800-816-620 (free call).

Ask.monash

Ask.monash is a web-based help system that helps you find the answers to your questions about Monash, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can find out answers to frequently asked questions, submit your own questions online, and monitor the progress of questions you have submitted. Visit the ask.monash website.

Books

The Monash University Bookshop stocks all the textbooks required for your course. Software, stationery, general books, cards and wrapping paper are also available. Contact the bookshop on (03) 5122-6310 or call in to room 1N108. Details can be found at the bookshop website.

Campus Chaplain

The chaplain, who is available to all students on campus, can assist you with matters of faith and spiritual development as well as with pastoral care. There are a number of activities and services which are available to students of different faiths. The Spiritual Centre and Prayer Room (1N105, adjacent to the bookshop) are open to all. The Chaplain's Office is in 3N112 and the telephone number is (03) 5122-6425. Call in and say hello or visit the Chaplancy website.

Campus Nurse

The Campus Nurse is available to help students and staff with a wide range of health issues, including first aid, nursing care, immunisations, occupational health, sexual health and general health education, advice and referrals. Further information is available from the Health Service website.

Co-Op Program

Co-op is an optional education program that combines practical work experience with formal studies, with benefits to both students and employers. The Co-op Program encourages students and employers to build strong relationships throughout the student's university studies.

Counselling Service

Contact Health, Wellbeing and Development (located in room 3N102, telephone (03) 5122-6425) to make an appointment with a counsellor. Counsellors provide professional and confidential psychological counselling service for students and staff. Individual counselling is available for academic, personal and relationship issues. There are also group programs for stress management, exam skills, relaxation and communication skills.

Course Advice

For course-related inquiries, contact your faculty course advisor or administration officer (see also the key contacts list on this web site). If you want to defer or change your units, or if you have questions about HECS or ID cards, then visit Student Services in room 1W203 or telephone (03)5122-6287.

Disability Liaison

The Disability Liaison Unit (DLU) provides a range of services to assist students who have a disability or long-term medical condition to participate as independently as possible in academic activities. Services include note-taking, alternative format materials, access to on-campus adaptive technology equipment and alternative arrangements for assessment. The DLU is located in Room 3N102, telephone (03) 5122-6425 or visit the DLU website.

Food on Campus

Cafe and Bistro (in the Knuckle, opposite Library) is open from 8:30am - 2:30pm. They serve foccacias, hot snacks, coffee, cakes and light meals.

Financial advice

A Student Advisor is available to assist students with a variety of financial matters. This can range from student loans for any study related purpose, to information and advice regarding eligibility for Youth Allowance, Austudy, Abstudy plus budgeting advice and Saver Plus Program. Also contact the Financial Advisor to find out more about the bookshop grant scheme and emergency funds. Gippsland Education Precinct

The Gippsland Education Precinct (GEP) is one of only a handful of multi-sectoral institutions in Australia which have multiple education and training providers on a single campus. The partnership brings together four major education providers in the Latrobe Valley: Monash University, Gippsland Campus; Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE (GippsTAFE); Gippsland Group Training (GGT); Kurnai College (Years 11 and 12), with Latrobe City. The GEP offers learners: learning pathways across secondary school, vocational and higher education sectors; recognition for learning achieved; a focus on individual learners; support in developing your learning pathway; increased choice of course options; access to a variety of facilities and resources; and innovative learning through information communications and technology. The GEP is primarily located in buildings 5W and 6W on the university campus.

Health, Wellbeing and Development

The Health, Wellbeing and Development Hub provides a range of professional services to promote student and staff health and wellbeing. All services aim to enhance each individual's work, study and community experience whilst at Monash University. The services include counselling, financial aid, health care and off-campus housing advice. At Gippsland we also have the Disability Liaison Unit, Chaplaincy, Employment and Career Development and International Student Support. This includes specialised advice, assistance and services to meet the needs of international students regarding: pre-arrival; settling in and commencing studies; relevant government regulations; and making cultural adjustments to enhance the living and studying experience in Australia. Students and staff are welcome to access the services on any campus to help deal with family issues, spiritual, physical and psychological health concerns, financial and housing issues. Information Technology Services

ITS provides the information technology resources at the campus, including wireless access to the Monash network, classroom support, and the general campus computer laboratories. For information and/or help, contact the ITS Service Desk located in room 1E216 or telephone (03) 9903 2777. Alternatively, check the Gippsland ITS website or submit an online request.

Library

Join a tour of the Library for all the resource information you will need for your future studies. Tours run as part of the campus tours from 1:30pm-4:30pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. Read the daily newspapers, borrow videos and DVDs as well as books, or use the group study rooms. Bring your laptop; with wireless connections you can use it anywhere in the library. Ask at the Information Desk for information or assistance.

Learning Skills Unit

The Learning Skills Unit located in the Monash University Library provides services and resources to undergraduate and postgraduate students wishing to improve their academic skills, including the quality of their academic English. Assistance is offered in such areas as approaches to study, problem-solving and critical thinking, effective listening and note-taking, oral communication, reading, exam preparation, essay, report and thesis writing.

Drop-in sessions, classes and workshops are scheduled throughout the semester. Students can come to a drop-in session in the library for a brief 10 to 15 minute consultation with a learning skills adviser about assignments or academic skills. A longer appointment may be scheduled if deemed necessary by the learning skills adviser.

Online language and learning resources are also available. These include both general and discipline specific tutorials, interactive exercises, downloadable examples of student work and other resources covering:

  • essay, report and thesis writing;
  • reading and note taking;
  • grammar;
  • listening to lectures;
  • oral presentation;
  • exam preparation;
  • other study skills.

MUGZOO

MUGZOO Central, located near the student lounge, between the Cafe and Health Wellbeing and Development, is a campus retail outlet and reception desk for the Student Union. Newspapers and magazines; drinks and snacks; Fair Trade Products and gifts;office and student supplies; art materials; and film processing are available. Opening hours from 9am to 4.30pm weekdays. Off Campus Learning Centre, Student Support Unit

The Student Support Unit provides advice and assistance to students studying by off-campus learning mode. Students can contact the Unit about anything to do with their study including study materials, assignment submissions and returns, online learning, ordering textbooks and examinations. Off-Campus Students'Association

The Off-Campus Students' Association operates under the Monash University Gippsland Student Union Inc. and is managed by a committee of off-campus student representatives. Contact the Student Union or visit the website by taking the link from the MUGSU website.

Student Advocate and Support Coordinator

The Student Union Student Advocate and Support Coordinator assists students with any sort of grievance, including fees, library fines and exclusions. Contact the Student Union on (03) 5122-6248, visit the Reception Desk or contact cassandra.webb@general.monash.edu.au via email.

Student Assistance for Postgraduates

The Monash Postgraduate Association (MPA) provides professional and confidential advice to postgraduates on a range of issues including: administration, supervision, intellectual property, course quality, intermissions and extensions, assessment, resources, plagiarism, scholarships, thesis examination processes, faculty grievance processes. Student Ombudsman

The Student Ombudsman will review student complaints that have not been able to be resolved through the faculty or department processes. The Student Ombudsman is independent and impartial and is not an advocate for the University or the student. All matters brought to the Student Ombudsman are treated in confidence. Student Services

The Student Service Centre is located in building 1W, room 203. You can also contact the Centre by telephoning (03) 5122-6287, fax (03) 5122-6300 or submit queries through ask.monash. The Student Service Centre team assists new and enrolling students with their administrative needs and general inquiries during and after orientation. Services are available in areas including academic transcripts, cashiering and payments, admissions, courses, enrolments, examinations, fees, HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP, Commonwealth-supported places (CSP), graduations, scholarships, ID cards, student forms, student letters, travel concessions and ask.monash (frequently asked questions).

Student Union

The Student Union is an organisation run by students on behalf of students. The Student Union building is the central meeting place for students and the focus of most student activities. The Student Union retail and resource centre, located in MUGZOO Central, looks after all student inquiries and is the central contact area for all Student Union services and representative issues.
