Biosafety officers: role and responsibilities
Biosafety officers:
- Advise, inform, instruct and train people on local biosafety issues (use, storage, transport and disposal of biological substances) and gene technology regulation (licensing, facility certification, classification of activities)
- Help manage biosafety risks and hazards
- Assist in the application of OHS procedures on biosafety
- Review biosafety aspects of research projects and teaching activities
- Respond to, investigate and develop corrective actions following biosafety incidents
- Liaise with the University's OGTR Compliance Officer, OHS Branch, local OHS committee, head of unit or controlled entity and local health and safety representatives
- Monitor local area compliance with biosafety aspects of OHS policy and procedures
- Audit local area compliance with regard to biosafety and gene technology issues, and report breaches to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
