After fifteen years working in the finance industry I finally succumbed to my desire to learn more about natural resource management. I became interested in natural resource management through working with "Friends" groups on revegetation projects. I was also interested in many natural resource issues such as marine national parks, drought and water resource management and the management of open space in urban areas. My studies were a method of formalising the knowledge I was acquiring through general interest.

I studied fourteen units by off-campus education over six semesters. I Also studied two units on-campus towards the end of my degree. Combined with exemptions gained from previous studies, I was able to complete my degree in two and a half years. The flexibility of distance education allowed me to continue working full time. Residential schools provided the opportunity to meet other students and the academics that coordinate the courses, whilst completing the field and laboratory requirements.

Studying by distance enabled me to complete my science degree and provided the qualifications to enter a field of work that reflects my interests. I have since worked for an environmental consultancy firm, and currently work for Melbourne Water facilitating environmental projects on waterways in partnership with community groups and local government.
