
A distinguished diplomatic career and assistance in Japan following the 2011 earthquakes and tsunami has seen Monash University Monash Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow Professor Alistair McLean recognised in the Australia Day 2013 Honours List.
Professor Alistair McLean received an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his distinguished service to the advancement of Australia’s diplomatic, trade and cultural relationships in Asia and for significant leadership and co-ordination roles in the Australian, International and local communities in Japan, following the earthquakes and tsunami in March 2011.
As one of Australia’s most senior professional diplomats, Professor McLean served as Australian Ambassador to Japan, in senior China postings (in Beijing and as Australian Consul-General in Shanghai), Australian High Commissioner to Singapore and as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. After retiring from government service Professor McLean was appointed as Chair of the Australia Japan Foundation and adviser in the development of the Australian Government’s White Paper ‘Australia in the Asian Century’. He also advises and consults to business through his company, Dunmore McLean Pty Ltd.
Fellow Monash academics Professor Emeritus Gary Bouma, Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor Andrew Cochrane, Professor Michael Toole, Emeritus Professor Owen Potter and Emeritus Professor Roy Jackson have also been recognised for their extraordinary contributions to Australian communities in the 2013 Honours List.
Professor Gary Bouma from the School of Political and Social Inquiry was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to sociology as an academic, to interfaith dialogue, and to the Anglican Church of Australia.
Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor Andrew Cochrane from the Department of Surgery was appointed an AM for his significant service to congenital heart disease and humanitarian and philanthropic work.
Emeritus Professor Owen Potter from the Department of Chemical Engineering received his AM for his significant service to chemical engineering and to the Catholic Church, while Emeritus Professor William Jackson from the Centre for Green Chemistry received his AM for significant service to science in the field of organic chemistry as an educator and researcher.
Professor Michael Toole from the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine was awarded his AM for his significant service to international health, particularly through leadership in medical research.
Monash alumni Professor Marilyn Renfree (HonLLD 2010), Clive Weeks (BE (Hons) 1969, MEngSc 1973and Dean Barton-Smith (GradDipMktg 2001, MMkg 2003) were also recognised with honours.
Professor Renfree was honoured with an AO for her distinguished service to biology, particularly through leadership in the research into marsupial reproduction, and to the scientific community through contributions to professional organisations.
Clive Weeks was awarded an AO for his distinguished service to engineering through leadership roles in the development of key civil works projects and through contributions to professional and educational organisations. Mr Weeks is a longstanding supporter of the University’s Faculty of Engineering.
Dean Barton-Smith was honoured with an AM for his significant service to the sport of athletics and to people who are deaf or hard of hearing through the development of sport and recreation opportunities.
