The future of palliative care in the spotlight

8 November 2004

Palliative care in Australia has progressed rapidly, incorporating expert symptom management as well as care of the 'whole person' -- the psychological, social, spiritual and cultural needs of the patient.

But there are fears that adoption of palliative approaches across the healthcare sector could be watering down this specialist care area and making it a less distinctive discipline for young students.

University of Sheffield Professor in Palliative Care Sheila Payne will speak about the future of palliative care and changes in policy and service delivery in Australia and the UK at the next Monash University Dean's -- Alumni Lecture to be held tomorrow, Tuesday 9 November at the Alfred Hospital.

The talk, Palliative Care: Care for the Many or the Few will be followed by a panel discussion on the topic.

What: Dean's -- Alumni lecture and panel discussion
Where: The Lecture Theatre, Monash Medical School, ground floor, Alfred Hospital, Commercial Rd, Prahran
When: 6.30pm, Tuesday 9 November
