Global award for Young Australian of the Year

19 November 2004

Young Australian of the Year and Monash student, Mr Hugh Evans, has received a prestigious international award for his humanitarian and volunteer leadership.

The Law/Science student has been named as one of 12 Outstanding Young Persons of the World for 2004. The award is conferred annually by the Junior Chamber International -- a worldwide federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs.

Mr Evans said the award was a great encouragement to him and to all volunteers.

"We believe this will give us the opportunity to take our message across the world -- a message that young people can make a difference in the lives of those in need," he said.

In January this year Mr Evans was named Young Australian of the Year after he successfully founded Australia's first entirely youth-run aid and development organisation, The Oaktree Foundation.

Last week, Mr Evans launched his book that describes his work, during 2002, at an AIDs orphanage in South Africa.
