Monash University appoints new Dean of IT

Monash University has appointed distinguished academic Professor Ron Weber as its new Faculty of Information Technology dean.
Professor Weber will take up his Monash role next month, leaving the University of Queensland where he is Professor of Information Systems.
Professor Weber said he felt honoured and privileged to be appointed to the Monash position. “Both the Faculty of Information Technology and Monash itself have outstanding reputations, and I look forward to working with my colleagues in my new role,” he said.
Monash vice-chancellor, Professor Richard Larkins, said that Monash was extremely fortunate to have attracted someone of Professor Weber's calibre to this important post. “The Faculty of Information Technology is a most important part of our university and Professor Weber will ensure that we extend the superb reputation of the faculty,” he said.
Professor Weber's main research interests are in ontology (a branch of metaphysics), conceptual modelling, modelling of information systems, and information systems management, audit and control.
His first degree was a Bachelor of Commerce in which he obtained first class honours from the University of Queensland in1972. He completed a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Minnesota in 1975, and was admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the same university in 1977.
Professor Weber is a fellow of the Australian Computer Society, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and CPA Australia. He was elected a Fellow of Australia's Academy of Social Sciences in 2002 and a fellow of the Association of Information Systems in 2000.
His many awards include the University Medal (University of Queensland), University of Minnesota Corporate Fellowship and the Prime Minister's Award for University Teacher of the Year (2000).
During his career Professor Weber has held visiting academic appointments at the University of Alberta, City University of Hong Kong, University of Minnesota, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, New York University and the University of Otago.
