Antarctic leader inspires students

7 August 2006

Antarctic expedition leader Ms Rachael Robertson has addressed a student leadership function at the Victorian College of Pharmacy.

Antarctic station leader Ms Rachael Robertson inspired pharmacy students at a leadership function at the Victorian College of Pharmacy in Parkville recently, in her talk Extreme Leadership at the End of the Earth.

Ms Robertson recounted the challenges she faced as head of the 58th Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition at Davis Station last year.

The Victorian College of Pharmacy Foundation stages the annual student leaders function to provide students, teachers, staff, donors and industry leaders with the chance to meet and exchange ideas.

Ms Robertson told those gathered about the unique challenges in managing the station, from the complex logistics of deploying scientists thousands of kilometres away from base in the icy wilderness to settling disputes over bacon.

She said some of the leadership qualities she learned to value along the way were the ability to perform under pressure, to expect the unexpected and, where appropriate, to have a good laugh.

Event coordinator Ms Elizabeth Welch said students put a range of lively questions to Ms Robertson and sought her advice on broader issues related to her experience.

"Rachael was so open and honest about her experiences, both good and bad. She was inspiring and great fun," Ms Welch said.
