Multiculturalism, secularism and interfaith relations

1 August 2006

Rabbi Michael Melchior, Honourable Chief Rabbi of Norway and one of the world's foremost leaders of Jewish people, will present his only Australian public address at the Fifth Annual Abraham Conference on Sunday 13 August.

The Abraham Conference promotes interfaith dialogue, harmony and peace between the three communities of the Abrahamic faith in Australia - Christians, Muslims and Jews.

Rabbi Melchior, a former Member of the Knesset of Israel and recipient of numerous prizes for world peace and interfaith relations, will present the keynote address titled 'Religious freedom and civil liberties' at the public conference.

He is committed to promoting dialogue and understanding between different faith communities and between religious and secular groups within and outside Israel.

A public symposium, titled 'Religious freedom and civil liberties' will follow Rabbi Melchior's address with panellists New Zealand-born writer Mr Arnold Zable, Isik College Dialogue Coordinator Mrs Fulya Celik and Churches of Christ Theological College Principal Reverend Merrill Kitchen.

The conference is jointly presented by the Australian Intercultural Society, Monash University's Australian Centre for the Study of Jewish Civilisation, Monash's Centre for Studies in Religion and Theology, the Asia-Pacific Centre for Inter-Religious Dialogue, the Australian Catholic University and the Catholic Interfaith Committee.
