Journey back to the golden eras of cinema

13 July 2006

A performance that recollects the eras of melodrama and silent film as well as the passion of film noir will be on show at Monash University this month.

Square Eyes is this year's second production by the Monash University Graduate Ensemble, featuring James Andrews, Briani Brooker, Angus Brown, Belinda Double, Simon Doyle, Jake Oliver, Penelope Parsons-Lord, Smeeta Singh, Bryony Wilson and Nikki Winters.

The group-devised performance is directed by accomplished Australian writer/director Madeleine Blackwell.

The ensemble performance is based on movement and imagery. The set creates the atmosphere of cinema through the use of cameras on stage, text, film, screen and live stage performances.

"Square Eyes is a challenging concept as it sweeps across various eras of cinema," Ms Blackwell said.

"The audience can expect to see and experience a dream of cinema, while the actors explore whether the ancient craft of acting is disappearing or whether we are submerged within another version of reality."
