The impact of Australia's financial services reform on the industry, investors, accountants, regulators and financial planners will be discussed at a one-day conference hosted by Monash's Department of Business Law and Taxation on Friday 14 July.
The reforms, which were introduced in amendments to the Corporations Act in 2004, brought all financial services and products under one regulatory regime.
Associate Professor Paul Latimer, from the Department of Business Law and Taxation, said the aim of the regime was to increase the level of compliance and competency in the financial services industry.
"This conference will weigh up the improvements and benefits of the regime against the unintended procedural and practical consequences for the financial services industry and investors -- an exercise in cost-benefit analysis," he said.
Conference speakers include:
- Mr Ian Johnston, formerly Executive Director of Financial Services Regulation with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and now with the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission;
- Professor Niamh Moloney of Nottingham Law School;
- Senator Nick Sherry, Shadow Minister for Superannuation and Intergenerational Finance;
- ABC business commentator Mr Alan Kohler;
- Ms Joanne Bloch, CEO of the Financial Planning Association of Australia; and
- Ms Jennifer O'Donnell, NSW Regional Commissioner and Executive Director of Compliance with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
The conference, presented by Monash University's Department of Business Law and Taxation and the Corporate Law and Accountability Research Group, is supported by the Financial Planning Association of Australia.
