Mr Bailey's Minder at Monash

20 April 2006

The hilarious and heart-warming new play Mr Bailey's Minder will feature at Monash University's Alexander Theatre next month.

The cast, from left: Kate Mulvany (Therese), Kirrily White (Leo Bailey's eldest daughter Margo), Jonathon Elsom (Leo Bailey), and Andy Rodoreda (Karl).

Presented by Griffin Theatre Company in association with Riverina Theatre Company, Mr Bailey's Minder is the first production in Monash's 2006 Performing Arts season.

Award-winning Australian playwright and author Debra Oswald wrote the play, which stars actors Jonathon Elsom (Leo Bailey), Kate Mulvany (Therese) and Andy Rodoreda (Karl).

The play depicts the relationship between Therese, not long out of prison, who takes up a position as the carer of Leo Bailey, 'Australia's greatest living artist', following a succession of others who could not stand Leo's vicious tongue and wild antics.

Together they negotiate an odd friendship that develops with Karl, a carpenter sent to remove a valuable mural from Leo's house.

The Director of Monash University Arts Centres, Ms Jan Clancy, says the play is deeply moving and entertaining.

"Debra Oswald touches us all with characters that are able to transcend their troubled destinies," Ms Clancy says. "This is a life affirming and inspirational play and highly recommended viewing.

"It is a wildly funny and wonderfully entertaining new Australian play that will engage its audiences as they witness the forging of an odd and enduring friendship."

Monash will host three performances -- one matinee and two evening sessions, from 5-6 May. For bookings telephone 9905 1111. Concessions available. Subscriptions to the 2006 Monash Performing Arts season are available now.
