The Monash University School of Music -- Conservatorium's Distinguished Lecture for 2006 will explore the impact of jazz in Italy.
The public lecture titled: Musical scenarios in Italy, at the beginning of the 20th century, when jazz and American music were beginning to conquer Europe, will given by Italian scholar and world-renowned musicologist Dr Marcello Sorce-Keller.
When jazz reached Europe in the 1920s it had an immediate effect on composers and musicians, French composer Claude Debussy.
In Italy, however, the influence of jazz was muted. Professor Sorce-Keller will explore why, as well as explain how jazz began to interact with local music traditions in Italy.
Dr Marcello Sorce-Keller is a prominent Italian ethnomusicologist and distinguished visiting fellow at Monash's School of Music -- Conservatorium. He has researched and taught ethnomusicology and musicology in Italy, Switzerland and the USA. He is currently researching the music of Italian and Swiss immigrants in Australia.
