Monash South Africa hosts youth program

26 October 2005

Personal development, public speaking and leadership skills were key features of the International Training in Communication (ITC) youth program hosted by Monash South Africa earlier this month.

More than 150 learners from 15 Gauteng schools attended the ITC youth program at Monash South Africa.

The event was attended by more than 150 Grade 11 students from 15 schools in Gauteng province.

ITC is a non-profit organisation with headquarters in New Zealand and world-wide clubs in countries including South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Australia.

Monash South Africa has hosted and co-sponsored the ITC Youth Program since 2003.

The program emphasises a unique learning experience by introducing subjects and topics the students are unlikely to encounter elsewhere. This year, Monash student volunteers acted as facilitators alongside ITC members.

Program presenters included Sister Ruth Loubser, a sexual health educator and well-known TV personality; LoveLife, the largest HIV/Aids awareness organisation in South Africa; and motivational speaker Mr Jacques Pretorius, who spoke about neuro-linguistic programming and its practical applications.

The students participated enthusiastically in the debates, embracing the opportunity to make their voices heard.

"Monash is delighted to have participated in this successful and worthwhile event as part of our engagement with the broader community, and we look forward to hosting it again next year," Monash South Africa marketing manager Mr Andre Lubbe said.
