Neave made lasting contribution: Monash Law dean

24 February 2006

Monash University Law dean Professor Arie Freiberg has congratulated former Associate Dean of the faculty, Professor Marcia Neave, on her appointment as a Judge of Victoria's Court of Appeal.

Professor Neave held the positions of Associate Dean (Staffing) and chair of the Undergraduate Studies Committee during her time at Monash's Law Faculty.

She chaired the faculty's Curriculum Review from 1992 until 1994, which led to compulsory course units being offered over single semesters, enabling students to take a wider range of electives. Professor Neave also instituted the university's unit evaluation process through which students offer feedback on the teaching they have received.

Professor Freiberg said during the review, Professor Neave consulted widely with staff and contributed many creative ideas.

"She played a key role in influencing how the Law course is taught and structured today," he said.

"She was a magnificent role model for younger female staff and was always available to provide informal advice and a sympathetic hearing.

"Her outstanding research record inspired many junior staff and students."

Professor Neave was president of the Commonwealth Administrative Review Council and has been chair of the Victorian Law Reform Commission since 2000. Before that she was involved in law reform in Victoria and interstate.

Professor Neave replaces Judge Ormiston, who retires this month.
