Monash University's School of Music -- Conservatorium's annual lunchtime concert series begins next month at the university's Clayton campus, with performances of jazz, opera, classical and contemporary music. The program features top international and Australian musicians and vocalists, as well as staff and students from the school.
The Head of Monash's School of Music -- Conservatorium, Associate Professor Craig De Wilde, said the 'Music at Lunchtime' series was a chance for the wider community to share in a rich musical heritage. "This concert series features world premiere performances, solo recitals and ensembles, allowing audiences to experience a wide range of musical styles and traditions," he said.
March program
2 March -- "Perfect Timing" -- a tribute to Anna Russell, concert comedienne extraordinaire.
London-born Russell was an acclaimed lyric soprano who starred in opera and her own Broadway show, and appeared frequently on television and radio. The tribute is written and performed by Australian actor and musician Wendy Grose (vocals), accompanied by Len Vorster (piano).
9 March -- "From Russia With Love" - program of Russian classical music performed by international pianist James Brawn. The concert features works by Russia 's great composers - Alexander Scriabin, Serge Rachmaninoff, and Serge Prokofieff. James Brawn has studied and worked in the UK , USA , New Zealand and Australia . He has won numerous awards and competitions, and has made several recordings for ABC Classic FM and 3MBS.
16 March -- "Angels and Rascals" - jazz concert by The Andrea Keller Quartet. Features works from the quartet's 2005 ARIA-nominated album 'Angels and Rascals', plus new material. The quartet comprises three-time ARIA-award-winning artist Andrea Keller (piano), Eugene Ball (trumpet), Ian Whitehurst (tenor saxophone) and Joe Talia (drums).
23 March -- "The Phonos Project" - a concert of beautiful contemporary classical music, including the world premiere of two new works -- Io composed by Moe-born clarinettist Karen Heath and Stadium by Swedish composer Henrik Hansson. Io portrays the tragic Greek mythological tale of Zeus, his lover Io and Zeus' wife Hora. This choreographic music work (dancing and playing an instrument at the same time) is performed by Karen Heath (bass clarinet).
30 March -- "R & R" - classical music concert exploring the complex interrelations of ancient Rome . Fintan Murphy (violin), Ivana Tomaskova (violin), Elizabeth Sellars (violin) and Tamara Smolyar (piano).
