Enhancing trust in business leaders

7 February 2006

Leading international academics, business leaders and legal professionals will debate solutions to arguably the biggest challenge facing business leaders worldwide -- stakeholder trust -- at a two-day conference on 8 and 9 February.

Hosted by Monash University's Department of Business Law and Taxation and the School of Business and Economics, Gippsland campus, the Corporate Accountability conference will examine ways to minimise or prevent the problems that bring about the collapse or under-performance of corporations.

Conference convenor Dr Gerald Acquaah-Gaisie, from Monash University , said today's business leaders had to meet the expectations and regulations of shareholders, corporate stakeholders, regulators, society generally and the environment.

"Confidence in our business leaders has been eroded by the collapse and underperformance of some of the world's most well-known corporations including Enron and HIH," he said. "In response to the increasing expectations for regulating corporate activity, most countries have implemented stricter regulations and reporting standards for listed companies."

The conference will address the ongoing debate of whether regulation translates into ethical corporate behaviour. Papers to be delivered include:

Corporate Ethics and The Global Economy. The Honourable Justice Murray Kellam AO, Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia.

Strategic bluffing or unjustifiable deception? Leadership tactics in large international mergers and acquisitions, Dr Kathleen Marshall Park, MIT Sloan School of Management, USA.

The business of business -- bringing consciousness to business. Mr Steven Bowman, Managing Director of LifeMastery Pty Ltd, Melbourne.

Dr Acquaah-Gaisie will be available for interviews from 4.30 pm until 5.00 pm on Wednesday 8 February 2006 in the foyer of the conference venue.
