Three senior academics are among Monash University's recipients of Australia Day Honours for 2006.
The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Professor Ed Byrne, received an AO (Officer in the Order of Australia) medal for his services to neurology as a clinician and academic, and in recognition of advances in mitochondrial muscle disease.
Professor the Honourable George Hampel QC of the Law faculty was awarded an AM (Member in the Order of Australia) medal for service to legal education, particularly in the field of advocacy training, and to professional organisations. Professor Hampel teaches advocacy to barristers and solicitors in Australia, Britain, Scotland and Singapore, and he also trains war crime prosecutors in The Hague and Tanzania.

Professor Uwe Proske of the Department of Physiology in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences received an OAM (Medal of the Order of Australia), for his service to physiology, particularly in the area of neuroscience, and to medical research. Professor Proske, who holds a Personal Chair in Physiology at Monash, is a member of the Physiological Society of Great Britain and the International Brain Research Organisation.
Monash Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Larkins described the three professors as worthy recipients of Australia Day Honours.
He also praised the many other members of the Monash community who were named in the Australia Day Honours.
"It is wonderful that the extra contributions made by past and present staff and alumni, that go beyond the expectations of their formal roles, have been recognised in this way," Professor Larkins said.
