Monash University Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Larkins has paid tribute to Professor David de Kretser on his naming as the next Governor of Victoria.
Professor de Kretser, who was the foundation director of the Monash Institute of Medical Research (MIMR) and has been at the forefront of reproductive medicine for the past 40 years, was announced incoming Governor of Victoria by the Premier Mr Steve Bracks today. He will begin the five-year appointment on 7 April.
Professor de Kretser retired as director of MIMR in May last year, but has continued at Monash as Associate Dean (Biotechnology Development) in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. He also remains Director of Andrology Australia, a Federal Government initiative administered by the Monash Institutes of Medical Research.
In 2000, Professor de Kretser was admitted as an Officer of the Order of Australia and in 1996 was elected a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. In 2001 he was recognised as Victorian Father of the Year.
Professor Larkins said he was absolutely delighted that a scientist and academic of the calibre and distinction of Professor de Kretser had been appointed to this important role.
"This is recognition not only of David de Kretser's personal qualities, but also of the significance of scientific research to the future of Victoria and the community in general," he said.
"David de Kretser will perform the role of Governor with great distinction."
Monash Institute of Medical Research Director Professor Bryan Williams said the institute was honoured Professor David de Kretser had been chosen as the next Governor of Victoria.
"Professor de Kretser has been able to successfully marry his scientific interest with his clinical work. His leadership, foresight and creative mind have led to his achievements as a world-renowned scientist, clinician, and academic," he said. "We know Professor de Kretser's experience in the scientific and medical fields, coupled with his extensive community ties, will stand him in excellent stead for the challenges of his new, exciting role as Governor of Victoria."
Professor de Kretser joined Monash in 1965 in the Department of Anatomy. In 1990 he established the Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development with Professor Alan Trounson. The Institute merged with other Monash research centres and the Southern Health Network to become the Monash Institutes of Medical Research in February last year.
Professor Larkins also congratulated Monash alumna, Justice Marilyn Warren, who has been appointed Lieutenant-Governor.
