Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories Director, Professor Alan Trounson, will discuss the uses of stem cells in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering at Monash tomorrow, Friday 9 December.
The stem cell pioneer will be the keynote speaker at an International Bio Engineering Symposium at the Clayton campus.
The university's new Bio Engineering Laboratory will be officially opened at the conclusion of the symposium by Mr Matt Viney MP, Parliamentary Secretary, Innovation and Industry.
Professor Trounson will discuss the topic 'Stem cells, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering -- a golden opportunity to unite biology and engineering in a new biotechnology.'
Dr Dwayne Kirk of Arizona State University will discuss, 'Bioengineering and the business of science'; and Professor Joe McGeough of the University of Edinburgh will discuss, 'Micro and nano engineering in the life sciences and orthopaedic surgery'.
At the conclusion of the half-day symposium, Professor John Sheridan, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering will introduce Mr Viney who will officially open the new laboratory.
The new facility has been made possible with supporting funds from VESKI (Victorian Endowment for Science, Knowledge and Innovation) that will facilitate research into development of manufacturing technology new generation DNA-based vaccines. Professor Alan Trounson is a VESKI board member.
