A new 400 million rupiah ($AUD55,000) project to provide teacher training programs for secondary, junior high and primary school teachers in Indonesia has been announced in Jakarta today.
Monash University and Jakarta International College (JIC) are extending their partnership to develop the program to improve the quality of teaching in Indonesian schools.
Indonesian teachers will be supported by training activities conducted both in Jakarta (by Monash College Jakarta) and by Monash University in Australia. JIC, which provides Monash University Foundation Year and Monash College programs in Jakarta, has announced a donation of 400 million rupiah to establish the new teacher training program.
Monash Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Larkins visited JIC today to announce the new program and to launch Monash University Foundation Year in Jakarta.
"Monash has a long association with Indonesia and is pleased to support enhanced professional development for teachers in Indonesia," Professor Larkins said.
"Education is a cornerstone of national development and we look forward to working with our colleagues at JIC to improve the quality of teaching in Indonesian schools."
Mr Fasli Jalal, Director General for Education and Teacher Quality Improvement of the Ministry of National Education of the Indonesian Republic, said he appreciated the contribution.
"This commitment from JIC shows the benefits of collaboration between elite Indonesian colleges and foreign universities," he said.
"We hope that JIC's donation will also inspire other educational institutions to share their revenue to support social development activities in Indonesia."
