Celebrating 80 years of education

15 November 2005

More than 80 years of educational history will be celebrated at the Monash University Back To Caulfield Reunion today, Tuesday 15 November.

Mr John Dann, who joined the campus as computer centre manager in 1971 was one of the guests at the reunion.

More than 550 former students and staff and current staff of the campus will gather to reminisce about their days at Caulfield and to see how the campus has changed.

Monash University's Caulfield campus opened in 1922 as the Caulfield Technical School, enrolling more than 200 students in wheelwright and blacksmithing courses.

By 1969 the campus had become the Caulfield Institute of Technology and trade courses were replaced with diplomas and degrees in computing, business, applied science, engineering, mathematics and psychology.

The institute amalgamated with the State College of Victoria at Frankston in 1982 and became the Chisholm Institute of Technology.

In 1990, Chisholm merged with Monash University and the site became the university's Caulfield campus.

The Academic Director for Caulfield and Clayton campuses, Professor Rob Willis, said the reunion would help reconnect disparate and interested staff and students and encourage them to share their stories and celebrate the success of the campus.

"A major issue facing a university the size and complexity of Monash is how we maintain contact with our alumni," he said.

"One way to do that is through a reunion -- bringing together students and staff from all iterations of the campus over its 83-year history. This event is a celebration of the campus and the people throughout the years that have made it what it is today."
