The Monash Education faculty has won a national award for a masters degree that provides counselling skills for professionals.
The one-year Master in Counselling won the Australian Counselling Association's annual award for training and development.
Professor Dennis Moore, who heads the Master in Counselling course, said the award was great recognition for the faculty team that provided the program.
"It is fantastic news. It is especially gratifying because the faculty was nominated by the students doing the course," Professor Moore said. "The association commented that we have very happy students who think it is a great training program."
The Monash Master in Counselling course competed against 32 courses also recognised by the Australian Counselling Association.
The Monash course is a full-time program designed to fulfil the demand for counselling knowledge and skills among professionals including teachers, nurses, social workers and human resources managers.
The coordinator of the Master in Counselling course, Dr Nicky Jacobs, said the program complemented the existing psychology masters programs offered by the education faculty through the Institute of Human Development and Counselling.
"It includes a supervised, clinical training placement that provides a formal qualification for people who may not be practicing psychologists, but who have a strong interest in counselling," she said.
