New masters degrees in human rights and regulatory studies

26 October 2005

Monash University's Law School will tonight launch Australia's first and only masters degree dedicated to human rights law.

The masters in human rights law will be offered from 2006 as will a masters degree in regulatory studies.

The dean of Monash's Law School, Professor Arie Freiberg, said the human rights law postgraduate degrees would build on the law school's outstanding reputation as a forum for human rights scholarship and discourse.

"These innovative postgraduate programs will expand on the efforts of the Law School's research centre - the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law," Professor Freiberg said.

The programs, available to graduates from law and non-law disciplines, include units relating to the rights of vulnerable people such as children, indigenous communities and women; and explore these issues from international and domestic standpoints.

Monash established its Centre for Regulatory Studies earlier this year in a joint initiative between the Faculties of Law; Business and Economics; Arts; Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences; and the Victorian College of Pharmacy.

Professor Freiberg said the centre had developed a comprehensive and flexible postgraduate program - available to graduates from law and non-law disciplines - designed to address the nature, extent and implications of the regulatory environment.

"One of the main objectives of the regulatory studies program is to provide professionals working in regulation, regulatory affairs, government relations and compliance, with an understanding of law, economics, public policy and public administration," he said.

Students are able to choose from electives including Asian business law, financial services regulation, corporate governance, introduction to risk principles and employee relations law.

The majority of units for both programs will be taught at the Monash University Law Chambers in Melbourne , with others based at the Clayton or Caulfield campuses.
