A one-day symposium on the art of drawing will be hosted this Saturday, 1 October, by Monash University's Faculty of Art and Design.
The symposium, Elements of Drawing: From Practice to Theory, is an initiative of the faculty's Drawing Studio.
Representatives from Monash, RMIT's School of Art and the Victorian College of the Arts' School of Art will discuss current trends in drawing, and the teaching of drawing in relation to contemporary art practice.
The symposium's keynote speaker is multi-award winning British artist Si Sapsford, who is a senior lecturer at East London University and currently an artist in residence at Monash.
As part of the symposium, drawing research projects from the participating institutions will be exhibited in the Fine Arts building at Monash's Caulfield campus. One of the works to be featured is 'Canberra's 18' by Victorian College of the Arts honours student Mr Azlann McLennan. The work deals with the complex dynamics of politics and political commentary in contemporary Australia.
The exhibition opens at 6pm on 1 October and will be on display until 23 October.
A live project focusing on collaborative drawing, led by artist and Monash research fellow Mr Geoffrey Dupree, will also feature.
The exhibition will tour to the University of East London next year, in exchange for a return exhibition to be presented at the 2006 Monash Drawing Symposium.
The 2005 Drawing Symposium is part of a three-year drawing research program (2005-07) being hosted by Monash University in collaboration with the College of the Arts and RMIT.
