Acclaimed pianist Larry Sitsky in concert at Monash

Acclaimed international pianist Larry Sitsky will perform at Monash University next month as part of the School of Music-Conservatorium's 'Making Music Series'.

Professor Sitsky will perform various works by Anton Rubinstein (1829-1894), including Sonata No.1 for Piano. The performance will be at 8pm on Saturday, 1 October, at the Music Auditorium, at Monash's Clayton campus.

Larry Sitsky is a world-renowned pianist and composer, and has received many awards and prizes for his compositions.

He was born in China of Russian-Jewish parents and settled in Sydney in 1951. Professor Sitsky studied piano from an early age and was awarded a scholarship to the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music from which he graduated in 1955. In 1959 he won a scholarship to the San Francisco Conservatory, and returned to Australia in the mid 1960s. Professor Sitsky was the first Australian to be invited to the USSR on a cultural exchange visit organised by the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1977.

His awards include a China Fellowship in 1983, a Fulbright Award in 1988-89, an Advance Australia Award for achievement in music in 1989, the inaugural prize from the Fellowship of Composers in 1989, and the inaugural Australian Composers' Fellowship presented by the Music Board of the Australia Council.

Professor Sitsky has had works commissioned by leading Australian and international bodies including the ABC, Musica Viva, the International Clarinet Society and the Sydney International Piano Competition.

His books include the two-volume The Classical Reproducing Piano Roll and Music of the Repressed Russian Avant-Garde, 1900-1929. He has also recorded a number of CDs of Australian piano music, including the complete sonatas of Roy Agnew.
