26 July 2005
Zimbabwean shadow justice minister and internationally-recognised human rights activist Mr David Coltart will deliver a public lecture on human rights and the rule of law in Zimbabwe at the Monash University law chambers tomorrow, Wednesday 27 July.
Mr Coltart has spent decades campaigning for human rights in Zimbabwe and is a critic of the president Robert Mugabe.
His lecture: 'Under siege: Human rights and the rule of law in Zimbabwe ' is being hosted by Monash University 's Castan Centre for Human Rights Law.
A member of Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change party, Mr Coltart says he has experienced years of intimidation and regular harassment.
His reports into human rights abuses during the Mugabe 'Plough and Reconstruct' campaign of 1985 and his defence of the then ZAPU Party MP Sidney Malunga and other dissidents, led to him being appointed director of the Bulawayo Legal Projects Centre, a role he has held since 1997. In this capacity, Mr Coltart has helped hundreds of Zimbabweans defend themselves in court cases.
The Castan Centre for Human Rights Law seeks to promote and protect human rights through the generation and dissemination of public scholarship in human rights law.
