New chair of Business at Malaysia campus

Professor G. Sivalingam, a specialist in economics, banking and finance has been appointed Chair of Monash University Malaysia's School of Business . He will also be the director of the university's Malaysian Business Unit.

Professor G. Sivalingam has more than 30 years experience as an economist and most recently was head of the Department of Finance and Banking at the University of Malaya.

At Monash he will help develop relationships with industry, government and other universities in the region. He will also develop a course in Malaysian Economy that will incorporate the history, structure and performance of the Malaysian economy.

Professor G. Sivalingam's research focus will be Malaysian business, particularly the areas of finance, strategy, organisation and management, competitiveness and marketing.

"The direction of the Malaysian Business unit will be to generate research and develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Malaysian companies and evaluate the companies using these indicators," he said. "Another main task of the unit includes organising conferences on issues related to Malaysian corporations and the performance of these corporations."

Professor G. Sivalingam will also build and develop relationships with industry. He hopes that through university-industry linkages, Monash graduates will be provided with more employment opportunities.

Professor G. Sivalingam has a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) and master of Economics from the University of Malaya and a PhD and MBA from Cornell University, New York . He graduated as the Best All Round Student of the University of Malaya in 1971, for which he received a Gold Medal.

He has been an American Council of Learned Societies' Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; a visiting scholar at the Harvard Institute of International Development, Harvard University and a visiting fellow at Cornell University.

Professor G. Sivalingam has published seven books and more than 30 journal articles as well as several book chapters. He is also a regular contributor to the national newspapers in Malaysia and has published in the Malaysian Business and Investors Digest.
