Collaborations between governments examined

8 July 2005

Monash University's Department of Management is hosting a conference on what's needed for better relations between and within various levels of government.

Department lecturer Dr Robert Smith said new policies such as those in education and the national regulation of gas and electricity demanded innovative strategies for managing intergovernmental relations.

"A good example is the education issue, which is the responsibility of the states but attracts the attention of the federal government because of the implications of educational outcomes for national economic competitiveness," Dr Smith said.

"This means that although relations between federal and state governments have tended to drift in the past decade, close collaboration between them may become urgent in the future."

The conference will explore relations between governments, sectors and agencies and the return of 'whole of government' agendas.
