Botswana officials visit Monash South Africa

22 June 2005

A high-level Botswana delegation, including Assistant Minister of Education Mrs Moggie Mbaakanyi and Consul General Mr CT Mogotsi, has visited Monash South Africa as part of a national tour of South African tertiary institutions.

The delegation was visiting institutions that are attended by Botswana students sponsored by the Botswana Government.

At Monash, they met with pro vice-chancellor Professor Tyrone Pretorius and senior management to discuss future relations and cooperative projects.

The group also met with the Botswana students studying at Monash South Africa.

Mrs Mbaakanyi said she was pleased with the education experience the Botswana students receive at Monash South Africa.

Mr Mogotsi said he intends paying frequent visits to the campus to foster and build ongoing relationships.

In Botswana, the demand for tertiary education has increased substantially over the past 20 years, largely due to the combination of population increase and the increase in senior secondary places.

Despite significant investment by government and the private sector in tertiary education, the shortage of places at tertiary level continues to be high.

In order to meet the country's tertiary education needs, the Botswana Ministry of Education operates the Grand Loan Scheme to finance tertiary study places abroad for courses in areas of critical need that are not available in Botswana.
