Ms Barlow is one of only six emerging curators nationally, and the only Victorian, to attend the premier international event for contemporary visual art, as part of this new program.
The initiative, also supported by Arts Victoria, covers all expenses and gives attendees the chance to take part in the Vernissage (the opening preview period), and other special events, as well as to meet with other curators, overseas artists and organisations.
Ms Barlow completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts and previously worked at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), focusing on emerging Melbourne and international artists. She was surprised and delighted to learn of her selection.
"Venice is buzzing with all sorts of people from the field of visual arts and this is an ideal opportunity to renew and make acquaintances, and view world class events on show at the various pavilions," she said.
"Exploring the National Pavilions and special exhibitions scattered through the ancient lanes of the city is a magical way in which to encounter powerful new works of art."
MUMA artistic director Max Delany said Ms Barlow's selection was a great opportunity for Monash.
"The Venice Biennale is widely viewed as one of the most important ways Australian artists and curators can be promoted internationally," Mr Delany said.
"Geraldine's invitation to attend the event recognises her ability as a curator and writer who is well positioned to successfully nurture the work of artists on the rise. She will have the perfect opportunity to mix with leading artists and curators and develop invaluable connections for future exhibitions at Monash."
The Venice Biennale was established in 1895 and Australia has had a presence at the event since 1954. The Biennale will run from 12 June to 6 November, and will be attended by curators, collectors, gallery directors, art critics and members of the public from around the world.
