Sport and Outdoor Recreation at Peninsula campus from 2006

11 May 2005

Monash University's Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation will be offered through the Education Faculty at its Peninsula campus from 2006.

The course has moved from the Education Faculty at the university's Gippsland campus which will expand its teaching of primary and secondary education to better meet the need for more teachers in the region.

The dean of education Professor Sue Willis said the changes were part of a realignment of Faculty of Education courses, designed to strengthen academic activities at both campuses.

"I fully expect this will be a change that will help both our Peninsula and Gippsland campuses," Professor Willis said. "The Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation will add a new and exciting dimension to the developing portfolio of teaching and research at Peninsula. At the same time, these changes will increase the critical mass of staff in teacher education at the Gippsland campus, and will allow the staff to offer teaching specialties that are needed in the local community and also to develop studies in youth and community development," she said.

Pro Vice-Chancellor (Campus Coordination) and Academic Director at the Berwick and Peninsula campuses, Professor Phillip Steele, said the introduction of the Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation at Monash Peninsula was a wonderful outcome for the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula region.

"I hope the local community will warmly welcome this development which fits so well with the interests and strengths of the region," Professor Steele said. "Sport and Outdoor Recreation will add to the growing academic activities in healthy and successful living undertaken at the campus".

Students who are already enrolled in the Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation will finish their studies at the university's Gippsland campus.
