One of South Africa's leading educators and academic leaders, Professor Tyrone B. Pretorius, has been appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor, Monash South Africa.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) for the past four years, Professor Pretorius spent the previous 10 years as Dean of Community and Health Sciences at UWC.
He has doctorates from UWC and the University of the Orange Free State and a post-doctoral fellowship from Yale University . Professor Pretorius' background is in psychology, and he has published extensively on the subjects of coping and stress.
He remains an active researcher and holds several government and higher education sector appointments.
"I'm excited to take up this appointment both professionally and personally," Professor Pretorius said.
"It is the culmination of almost 20 years in higher education. Monash is looking to the future in the new South Africa, and it's great to be a part of that vision."
Monash Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Larkins said the university was extremely fortunate in securing such an outstanding appointee.
"Professor Pretorius is eminently qualified to continue building on the work of the foundation Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Anderson," he said.
"Professor Anderson is leaving the campus with growing student numbers and I would like to formally thank him for his outstanding achievement in establishing Monash in South Africa ," Professor Larkins said.
Professor Pretorius will begin as Pro Vice-Chancellor on 4 April. Professor Anderson will return to Australia to take up the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Business and Industry).
