Legal future for South Africa

28 May 2003

Two senior academics from Monash South Africa discussed the future of humanrights law in that country when they visited the Law faculty on Clayton campus recently.

Professor Theo Scheepers, director of the Centre for Law and Reconstruction in Southern Africa (CLARISA), and Mr Terrence Mokale, CLARISA deputy director and director of legal services at the South Africa campus, were welcomed by Law dean Professor Stephen Parker.

Professor Scheepers was at the Law faculty to give a lecture as part of a seminar on the introduction of a new system of local authorities in South Africa.

He spoke about how local government will affect human rights and other legal obligations in South Africa.

"The role of local government in upholding human rights will be one of the keys to reconstruction in South Africa," Professor Scheepers said.
