Monash University has led the way in forming a new consortium of experts to tackle Victoria's obesity crisis.
Officially announced today by, Professor David de Kretser, AC, Governor of Victoria and Monash University alumnus, the consortium includes obesity experts from Monash, University of Melbourne, Deakin University, Baker IDI, and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute.
Monash University physiologist Professor Brian Oldfield said the consortium was formed in recognition of both the breadth and the complexity of the obesity problem and will connect experts from a range of institutions to improve research and treatment of obesity and related conditions.
"We aim to create integrated approaches utilising the expertise derived from obesity research groups across institutions. This includes new forms of research, more discussion between partnering institutions and the dissemination of quality, evidence-based information about obesity to counter incorrect information often directed at the public," Professor Oldfield said.
Professor Oldfield said the consortium would also advocate for obese people needing specialist care.
"Often patients needing help aren't themselves able to find the right solutions. The consortium will advocate for improved clinical care of obese patients and increased access to treatment for obese individuals," Professor Oldfield said.
"Working with experts in this field will enable us to create and share infrastructure for collaborative obesity research and monitoring. Some examples include the linking of data, biobanking, clinical databases and training opportunities."
One of the key presentations will be from Monash University's Professor Michael Cowley who will discuss the latest drug design in obesity research and how brain mapping leads to new obesity therapies.
His work mapping the pathways in the brain that sense body fat stores led to the development of a combination drug (Contrave), which has successfully completed Phase 3 testing several weeks ago and causes clinically meaningful weight loss. In 2010 Contrave will be reviewed by the US Food and Drug Administration for marketing authorization.
The consortium is being launched at a forum being held in Melbourne over the next two days.
There will be several lunch time presentations on both days aimed at the general public dealing with issues relating to the potential for developing pharmaceutical treatment and current views as to best approaches to prevention.
