Winners of nabCapital Science in Business Awards announced

Emmanuel Churchley and Andrew Lim were announced as the winners of the 2007 nabCapital Science in Business Awards last week in a ceremony hosted by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Edwina Cornish.

The nabCapital Science in Business Awards are a joint initiative betweenMonash University and nabCapital -- the capital markets division of National Australia Bank -- to award eligible students undertaking the Master of Business (Commercialising Science and Technology).

Managing Director of nabCapital Australia, Shaun Dooley, gave the $18,000first prize to Mr Churchley for his project, Amnion Derived Stem Cells in Reducing Lung Fibrosis.

Mr Lim received second prize of $9,000 for his project, Method for Promoting Organ Development. The prizes were in recognition of the students' achievements in their commercialisation projects, which involve producing commercialisation plans for scientific research being undertaken by Monash.

Mr Churchley worked with Monash scientists Alan Trounson, Graham Jenkin,Euan Wallace and Richard Boyd involving the commersialisation of research that has the potential to treat Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

Mr Lim collaborated with Monash scientist Sharon Ricardo and scientistsfrom Queensland and Scotland on a project to commercialise a method for the treatment of underdeveloped organs in premature infants.

Professor Nick Birrell, Director of the Monash Asia Pacific Centre forScience and Wealth Creation, said he was delighted Monash had joined forces with nabCapital to encourage and promote the commercialisation of science.

"This initiative is a very positive step in recognising the importance oftraining young people with skills required to generate wealth from Australia's outstanding scientific research," Professor Birrell said.

"Congratulations to Emmanuel and Andrew for their outstanding projects. Allprojects were of a very high standard."

Mr Dooley, the Head of nabCapital Australia, said the finance sector had animportant role to play in bringing good ideas to market.

"The Awards are about helping to bridge the gap between the wonderful workof Australian scientists and the potentially lucrative commercial opportunities that exist," Mr Dooley said.

The Monash Master of Business (Commercialising Science and Technology) isoffered by the Monash Graduate School of Business in collaboration with the Monash Asia Pacific Centre for Science and Wealth Creation.

The program is the only one of its type in Australia. Its specific intentis to provide students with skills in the business of science, including commercialising leading edge medical, scientific and technology research projects.
