Monash staff share their 2020 vision

Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President Research Professor Edwina Cornish will share her expertise in research, biochemistry, microbiology and genetics.

Eighteen Monash University leaders will be among 1000 people attending the Australia 2020 Summit later this month.

The group, chosen from around 8000 nominations from the nation's cultural, intellectual, business and sporting arenas, will debate and develop ideas under ten key themes in the forum created by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to shape a long-term strategy for the nation.

The Monash representatives are:

  • Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President Research Professor Edwina Cornish who is responsible for the direction and management of research at Monash University. Her expertise, not only in research, but in the areas of biochemistry, microbiology and genetics will be invaluable to summit discussions.

  • The Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design Professor John Redmond will share his experiences in the arts, and the impact of art and design on society.

  • Waleed Aly, a lecturer from the School of Political and Social Inquiry who is an expert on Australia 's Muslim community and the interface between Islam and the West. His opinions are regularly sought on topics as diverse as Islam, Australian multiculturalism, politics, society, faith and sport.

  • Honorary Senior Research Fellow from the School of Geography and Environmental Science Dr Graeme Pearman whose research interests include climate change science, public and private sector policy development, the impact of options for energy futures and the application of sustainability science.

  • Associate Professor Sharon Pickering, a Senior Lecturer from the School of Political and Social Inquiry, whose expertise covers policing, human rights, criminalisation and state crime.

  • Associate Professor Jude McCulloch, Head of Criminology, School of Political and Social Inquiry, who has expertise in criminology, law and commerce.

  • Dr Terry MacDonald, a lecturer from the School of Political and Social Inquiry, Faculty of Arts is an expert in global democracy and democratisation.

  • Professor Amanda Lynch from School of Geography and Environmental Science was one of eight Monash academics to share in a Nobel Peace Prize for their work into climate change. She is an expert in the areas of climate change and monitoring of worldwide weather patterns and trends.

  • Professor Sarah Joseph from the Faculty of Law and Director of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law will share her knowledge on international human rights law and constitutional law.

  • Head of Health Science from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Professor Helen Keleher has extensive experience in mental health promotion, primary health care, and building capacity for health promotion in the workforce.

  • Chair of International Public Health, Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine Professor Brian Oldenburg whose research focus spans the social/behavioural sciences and public health.

  • Associate Professor David Wright-Neville a Senior Lecturer from the School of Political and Social Inquiry is an expert on the political psychology of violence and contemporary terrorism.

  • Geraldine Barlow is the Curator and Collection Manager of Monash University's Museum of Art.

  • Former Victorian Deputy Premier and now Chairman of the Monash Sustainability Institute Professor John Thwaites will share his passion and knowledge on the environment, water and climate change.

  • George Pappas is Chair of the Monash Medical Research Advisory Board, Chairman of the Committee for Melbourne and a highly regarded business consultant.

  • Publisher and Monash University Council Member, Ms Louise Adler.

  • Director of the Australian Centre for the Study of Jewish CivilisationAssociate Professor Mark Baker

  • Dr Michael Fagenblat a lecturer in Jewish Civilisation from the Faculty of Arts.

Four Monash students will participate in the 2020 Youth Summit.

Naomi Godden who is studying Bachelor of Arts(Australian Indigenous Studies) / Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) will advocate for the issues and rights of rural young people accessing tertiary education.

Medicine students Susan Harch, Michael Loftus and Daniel Yore will also attend.

The appointed Chair of the 2020 Youth Summit is Hugh Evans, a Law/Science graduate from Monash University.

In announcing the participants, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said: "I would like to personally congratulate those invited to participate in this national debate about Australia 's long term future. I look forward to hearing your ideas for Australia's future."

The Australia 2020 Summit will take place in Canberra on the weekend of 19 and 20 April 2008.
